Session of the Senior Labour Inspectors’ Committee The 57th session of the Senior Labour Inspectors’ Committee (SLIC) was held in Stockholm on 23 and 24 November 2009. The National Labour Inspectorate was represented by: Tadeusz Jan Zając, Chief Labour Inspector and Grzegorz Łyjak, Director of Supervision and Inspection Department at the Chief Labour Inspectorate. The session comprised a one-day conference, known as the Thematic Day, and a plenary meeting devoted to SLIC’s initiatives at the European level. A conference under the title “Supervision of psychosocial risk assessments” referred to the topic of the Thematic Day organized in 2001 when Sweden previously held the EU Presidency. This year’s Thematic Day included three sessions devoted to: an introduction to the issue of psychosocial risk and its assessment in the workplace, a discussion of various inspection tools for supervising occupational risk, and exchange of experience and best practice in elimination and reduction of psychosocial risks in enterprises. Besides representatives of labour inspectorates from SLIC member states, representatives of science as well as employers’ and employees’ organizations attended the conference. The agenda of the second day of the SLIC’s meeting focused, first and foremost, on discussing the progress of preparations for the new European Union campaign on assessment of chemical risks in workplaces. Its objective is to promote knowledge and good practice in assessing chemical risks and develop practical tools for labour inspectors. Coordination of the campaign, planned for 2009-2010, has been entrusted to the Portuguese labour inspectorate. While presenting assumptions for the new SLIC’s initiative, a representative of Portugal informed all delegates that it will be targeted at small and medium-sized enterprises and will focus on furniture production, car repair, cleaning and bakery sectors. The campaign will begin with a communication part in December 2009. In spring 2010 training sessions for labour inspectors will be held to prepare them for the campaign’s second phase – conducting inspections in enterprises. Like in the case of the previous campaign on manual handling of loads in workplaces, inspectors trained at the European level will then conduct training in their own countries. The start of the inspection phase has been planned for mid September 2010. The campaign coordinator suggested that the whole initiative ends with a summing-up seminar in March 2011.
